The second edition of DW / 144: Specification for Sheet Metal Ductwork was launched in May 2014. This is a significant document for the ductwork sector, and ADCAS is recommending that its members take note of the new guidance.

The ADCAS Executive has decided that member companies of all sizes should have access to DW / 144. Therefore all ADCAS members are being offered a free copy and the Executive is encouraging those who receive the document to offer their feedback to ADCAS.

Malcolm Moss, ADCAS President, says: “It is important for our members to be informed so that they can offer sound advice to their clients. The Association also needs member feedback so that we can respond as an organisation to this new guidance, hence our offer of free copies.”

DW/144 was first published in 1998 as guidance on ductwork manufacture and installation. This second edition builds on the original contents with revisions, which take account of developments in technology and working practices.

The publication’s 200 pages cover ductwork application, materials, classification and air leakage; define the technical information to be provided by system designers to ductwork contractors; and look in detail at rectangular, circular, and flat oval ductwork.

Moss adds: “When reading this document, members should pay particular attention to the sections on ductwork galvanisation and the gauge of ductwork. It has been over fifteen years since the first publication of DW / 144 and this updates contains changes that will affect our manufacturer and installer members.”

Content has also been expanded on hangers and supports, smoke and fire dampers, external ductwork, internal duct linings, thermal insulation and air terminal units with many clear reference tables. There is a completely new section “Commentary & Guidance” which although it does not form part of the DW/144 Technical specification provides information for reference on a number of subjects including Swimming Pool Systems, Environmental Management, Health and Safety and Fire Resisting Ductwork.

Once members have shared their thoughts on DW / 144, ADCAS will formulate an official response to the Guidance which will be published on the Association website, and which will highlight key areas likely to affect ADCAS members and their customers.
